Spring Cleaning, Feng Shui Style

Clearing out and Cleaning Up for Energy Flow in the Home

Chances are, you're going to do Spring Cleaning anyway. Now is the perfect time to use Feng Shui to attract what you want in your life.

It’s a funny thing about spring cleaning. Some of us love it; it gives us a chance to actually celebrate the lovely coming months after a long and often dreary winter. Then again, many of us hate it; or, more accurately, hate anything that involves cleaning. Think about those long overdue jobs you have put off and when you finally pushed yourself to do them; there was a real sense of accomplishment, I bet. Not to mention a huge relief.

Integrating our annual spring cleaning, whether we love it or hate it, with Feng Shui principles isn’t difficult. After all, you’re going to be doing most of these things anyway. While cleaning out, we just ask you to look at your surroundings differently. Remember, Feng Shui is simply seeing things differently then we did before. Getting another perspective on things is always helpful.

First, the exterior. It’s likely you’re going to address the outside anyway, do it with a Feng Shui point of view to start attracting wonderful new things into your life this year. Get a Bagua and familiarize yourself with the different areas; you know which ones need work. From standing in front of your home, look to the back left hand side of your yard. You’ve just located your Wealth area. Take a look and see what’s there. Is that where you store dead firewood, is it cluttered? Or is there an evergreen planted there? You want to enhance this area so clean it out completely, put in a healthy year round plant, add a pretty purple wind chime. And do it with the best Intentions to create a wonderful year and life of wealth (in all areas).

How’s the back right hand section? That’s your relationship area. Take an evaluation of your relationships, both business and personal and see what you’ve got going on. This is another area you especially want to emphasize and we do it while thinking in “twos.” A pretty statue here of two people (same sized, please) and accenting it with the color pink will help institute help for you in this area, whether you are in a relationship and would like to enhance it or if you are looking for that new, right partner. Remember to infuse any changes with your energy and intentions to help them become a reality.

Look at your pathway to the front door, or, more appropriately known as The Mouth of Chi. The path leading to your home should be clean and lovely. I often suggest solar lights lining the path with our intentions being to “light it up.” We want to allow all the new and good energy in we can.

Check to see that your front door is clean, with the doorbell working, balanced by some lovely life force plants on either side of the entranceway and a welcome sign. We want to welcome in this new energy we are calling so strongly to us and words are a powerful sign of our intentions.

Time to get inside and get to work. I have a habit of always choosing the job I least like to do and begin with that. Once that hurdle is over, everything just seems easier. We know you have to declutter your space, clear out and lighten up. Those windows have to be washed so you can see clearly, dusting (clears out the cobwebs in your mind as well as the visible ones on the wall) and floors are always a joy. Choose your least favorite job, the one you dread and just do it. Remember to let go of things that are no longer useful in your life to allow the new energy to come in. The best thing you can do during spring cleaning from a Feng Shui Perspective is to clean OUT. Donate it, sell it, give it away. Join a group like Yahoo’s “Your junk, my treasure” or “Buy, sell, give it away.” List it for free on Craigslist or just take it to your local Salvation Army. People you are giving items to will be grateful and so will you.

A final thought that many of us forget, at least until we have to find something. Clean up your computer of all the files, saved notes and old favorites. Clean and clear your office space and once that’s done, keep it that way! Now you’ve just created room for more work (hence, more money) to come in and made it easier to keep your new work organized. A helpful Feng Shui hint for your office: hang a crystal, either a small one by your computer or a larger one in the center of your home office room. Crystals do a variety of things, this one is placed with the intention to help you think clearly and get your work done faster. Now you’ve got a little more time to enjoy some beautiful spring weather.
